India Installs Record 15.3 GW Solar in Q1 2026, Up 143% Year-on-Year

· Source: PV Tech

Quarterly Record Shattered

India installed a record 15.3 GW of solar capacity in the first quarter of 2026, representing a staggering 143% year-on-year increase compared to Q1 2025. Utility-scale projects accounted for the bulk of additions at approximately 12.6 GW, while rooftop solar contributed 2.7 GW. This single quarter's additions exceed India's entire annual solar installations as recently as 2020.

The surge reflects a confluence of factors: a large pipeline of projects reaching financial closure in 2024-2025, improved module availability from expanded domestic manufacturing, and a push by developers to commission projects ahead of PPA deadline extensions. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh were the top three states by new capacity.

Supply Chain Readiness

Unlike previous installation surges that were constrained by equipment shortages, Q1 2026 benefited from a well-supplied domestic module market and adequate inverter availability. String inverter lead times have normalised to 4-6 weeks, while central inverter deliveries remain at 8-12 weeks for large utility-scale orders.

For Buyers

The record quarter means more experienced installers, better-tested equipment configurations, and a competitive pricing environment. Residential buyers can expect system quotes that reflect economies of scale in the broader market. However, DISCOM processing capacity in high-volume states may face bottlenecks, so early application submission remains advisable.
