PM Surya Ghar Crosses 40 Lakh Households, Adds 23.5 GW Rooftop Solar
Milestone Achievement
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has officially crossed the 40 lakh (4 million) household mark, making it one of the fastest-scaling residential solar programmes globally. Cumulative rooftop solar capacity under the scheme now stands at approximately 23.5 GW, driven by aggressive subsidy disbursement and streamlined net metering approvals across states.
The programme offers up to INR 78,000 in subsidies for systems up to 3 kW, effectively covering 60% of installation costs for most households. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh continue to lead adoption, while southern states have seen accelerated uptake in 2026 thanks to improved DISCOM cooperation.
What It Means for Buyers
For residential buyers, this milestone signals a maturing ecosystem. Installer networks are now denser, financing options more competitive, and post-installation service infrastructure more reliable than even 18 months ago. Average system costs have dropped below INR 45,000 per kW after subsidy for 3 kW setups.
Homeowners still on the fence should note that subsidy budgets are finite. With 4 million households already enrolled, the remaining allocation will be consumed faster as awareness grows. Acting sooner locks in current subsidy rates and avoids potential wait-list delays in high-demand states.
