BIS Certification Deadline for Solar Inverters Above 200 kW Extended to June 30, 2026
Solar photovoltaic (SPV) inverters with capacity above 200 kW now have until June 30, 2026 to meet the requirements of the Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025. MNRE will allow operations under self-certification during this extended period.
Background
The original order required all solar inverters sold in India to carry BIS certification. While smaller inverters (below 200 kW) have largely complied, manufacturers of large-capacity string and central inverters have faced testing bottlenecks at BIS-accredited labs.
What This Means
For large solar project developers and EPC contractors, this extension provides breathing room. Projects specifying inverters above 200 kW can continue procurement without BIS certification until June 30, provided manufacturers have applied for certification and operate under self-declaration.
For Smaller Inverters
Home and commercial inverters below 200 kW are NOT affected by this extension. BIS certification remains mandatory for these products, and buyers should verify BIS marks on any inverter purchased for residential or small commercial use.
Action Required
If you're an inverter manufacturer in the above-200 kW segment, ensure your BIS application is submitted before June 30. The extension is explicitly stated as temporary, and MNRE has indicated no further extensions will be granted.
